Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th and 8th grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our students have many obstacles to overcome: low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, short attention spans, disinterest in their studies, challenging home lives, economic struggles at home, and sometimes even trauma. We also have many high achieving students who are always on task and ready to push themselves in every single subject area. Each year, we have students who are experiencing homelessness. Recently, several students have had parents deported, and they don't know when or if they will see that parent again.
It's so important to give students the necessary reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills that make up the heart of English language arts.
With these crucial skills mastered, their transitions to high school, college, and the workplace will be successful!
My Project
Middle school aged kids have to fight shyness, lack of self-confidence, and language barriers when speaking in front of a classroom of their peers. I also often have to fight my aging ears when trying to hear those students' responses to my questions.
Enter the QBall, a throwable microphone ball that can make answering in-class questions more appealing and fun as well as more easily heard by everyone in class, which is a win-win situation for all of my students and me.
The paper I am requesting would give my students plenty of materials for creating projects this year. Many of them soar when given old-fashioned paper to create brochures, ads, posters, and more. Unfortunately, I spent my $100 school-provided materials budget back in June when I got new markers and colored pencils for our classroom. Those markers and pencils aren't much good without a supply of paper!
