Help a student love history. In my seventh grade humanities class, my advanced English Language Learners study American history and writing. My students have come from countries around the world to find a good education, but in a high-needs community facing budget cuts, they don't always have the resources to best support their learning.

The aspect of history that my students most love to discuss and write about is the morality of decisions and actions that shape history. Unfortunately, our class is making do with resources that are difficult for students to connect with to really experience historical times.

The historical fiction novel My Brother Sam Is Dead gives the students a view of the American Revolution through a boy their own age, growing up in the midst of the war. Students will be able to see the effects of war on families and relationships, and follow the main character's thoughts as he questions the violence of the war. The novel will give students an engaging and informative resource they can use in writing and discussion about their own reactions to war.

With your help, my students can not only improve their literacy and historical knowledge, but work toward expanding and deepening their understanding of concepts like loyalty, violence, and determination.
