“We know that equality of individual ability has never existed and never will, but we do insist that equality of opportunity still must be sought."
As a result of the challenges that arose out of this ongoing pandemic and most recently racial justice, we have discovered new ways to engage, connect and support each other.
As I listen to these stories, I am constantly amazed by the respect my students give each other, and I see that respect growing each day as they learn together! Many of my students are English language learners and students who receive special education services. In addition, 90 percent of the students in my school are eligible for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
Some of my students live in unstable housing conditions in the South Bronx, but often still manage to come to school. These scholars are so motivated and eager to learn. Despite their circumstances, they are in school every day ready to take on the challenges. While they are in school, would like to ensure my student's basic needs are met.
It's not just the poorest families experiencing hunger now. This is a difficult time in our country for many people. The recent confluence of events has brought to the forefront, more than ever before, the inequities that we face in our society. The response to COVID-19 has impacted all of us in unprecedented ways. Among the drastic changes that have taken place, school closures have brought many uncertainties and concerns for our community. This pandemic did not affect all Americans equally. The coronavirus has spread through urban areas like the Bronx faster than rural areas and has disproportionately affected African-American and Hispanic communities. Hunger has increased most for black and brown families. I know from experience that a hungry child is not a happy child.
Hunger can lead to an inability to focus as well as behavioral outbursts.
My students will benefit from snacks and water to meet their basic needs.
The time to act is now to strengthen our communities, and we have a unique opportunity to make these changes.
