Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are almost exclusively from East Los Angeles, first and second-generation in the U.S., and often come to us several grade levels behind in reading, as well as other subjects.
We want to educate the whole child, which means boosting their literacy, teaching the scientific method, and exploring mathematical concepts, yet--but it ALSO means inspiring and empowering youth that are civically engaged.
For our students, field trips provide a learning experience that is both engaging and relevant to their daily lives.
My Project
On this trip, students will have docent-guided tours of the Autry's exhibits. They will be able to explore, wonder, and ponder the history of Los Angeles, including the influential bilingual newspaper, La Raza, which provided a voice to the Chicano Rights Movement. This is particularly important for our students, who hail from one of the birthplaces of the Chicano Movement: East LA. This multimedia exhibit "provides the foundation for an exhibition exploring photography’s role in articulating the social and political concerns of the Chicano Movement during a pivotal time in the art and history of the United States" (Autry website). As our students enter the museum, they will begin to position themselves within a history of activism and advocacy. Perhaps some may even leave as aspiring journalists.
