Quarantined With a Book, Ending the Year With a Bang!
Help me give my students 15 books to encourage reading while at home, 15 Combination Locks and 15 thumb drives as their 5th grade promotion gift needed for their next phase of education in Middle school!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
What a shock to not only me as a teacher, but especially my 5th grade Scholars to initially be told we would be out of school for 3 weeks due to these unprecedented times. There were so many unanswered questions and concerns, yet, as they left on March 13th, they were sent with Love packets of work and encouraging messages.
Even with tears leaving, field trips and performances canceled , there was still hope.
The thought was we'd be back in 3 weeks and that was hard enough. My students were going home to all kinds of situations and uncertainties. I work in an urban district where all students receive free lunch. My thought was who would actually go hungry during these times. However their thought seemed to be more concerned about continuing to learn so they were prepared for Middle school.
As we know, school ended up being cancelled for the rest of the year and there went even their 5th grade promotion. This has been pretty devastating to for them.
My Project
I have always tried to encourage a love for reading for my students. As we are quarantined in our homes what better way to escape the unfortunate news that is on constantly about COVID 19 then to enjoy a good book.
Chapter books chosen serve two very important purposes.
These books will be used for our reading groups during our ZOOM meeting and used to teach much needed Social-Emotional skills, especially as they are preparing for middle school.
Lastly, we would have had a promotion assembly in which students would've been presented gifts. The locks and thumb drives are simply gifts to say congrats! You did it! You're headed to Middle School!
