Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school in Los Angeles where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students start the day, everyday, hopeful of what we will learn in class that day.
I ask them, "Why did you come to school today?" and they reply, "To change the world!" My students know that I believe in them and that with passion, determination, and positive outlook of their potential they can be anything they want to be.
Many of my students receive complimentary district provided meals after school. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
My Project
A good scientist asks questions about the world around them. A good scientist collects and compares data. Having tools of measurement as part of your daily tool set inspires students to measure, compare and ask questions about the objects and experiences in their daily lives. Questions like, "Does my red Crayon weigh the same as your red crayon?" is a simple but profound way to begin to ask interesting questions about objects in their environment. This kind of question can lead to sophisticated data comparison and analysis: a whole class graph plotting the differences of all the red crayons in the class. A graph of change over time of weighing your crayoning monthly intervals from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. Questions like "How much does my name weigh?" or "how much does my drawing weigh?" or "do all new crayons weigh the exact same?" And this is just measuring crayons. Starting from something this simple students will be inspired to to ask questions about all the objects around them- can you weigh pencils? blocks? erasers? food? the earth?
