We have created a little family in my classroom that accepts new students as they move in and are sad when our friends leave. I teach in a Title I School where at least 89% are free or reduced lunch. There are students that take home backpack meals on the weekends. There are students who have been in transition and currently are living in a hotel. There are also students that have parents that work at the Air Force Base.
My Project
Reading aloud introduces new words, grammar and concepts that we may not use during a regular conversation. An average children's picture book may have around five hundred words. We can learn so much from a children's book!
The books that have been chosen are nonfiction and fiction.
Requested titles include Gingerbread Baby, Stelaluna, The Skin You Live In, National Geographic Readers, Each Kindness, The Sandwich Swap, Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs, Me and My Amazing Body, What is Veterans Day?, and Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me.
These books match kindergarten standards that need to be taught throughout the year. Many of my students do not have books read to them at home. I want to give them the best possible chance to build a strong foundation for learning. I want them to be successful in whatever path they choose in the future.
