Help me give my students high quality classroom headsets for them to use for instructional videos, read-aloud, fluency practice, and listening to recorded questions during testing.
We are a Title I school in Salt Lake City, where a large portion of our students are immigrants, refugees, and/or live under the poverty line. Our students have always had to be resilient due to the adversity they've faced at a young age. Since many of them were already living in "survival mode" every day, COVID has added more anxiety and isolation to their plates on top of previous traumas.
These students already experience opportunity gaps which lead to low literacy, language barriers, and a disinterest in school, which we at Granite Park strive to overcome by providing relevant materials and lessons that are engaging and also incorporate healthy emotional intelligence.
I will say that I'm often amazed despite these barriers at the maturity and open-mindedness I see in these kids. They can be so inquisitive, aware, and supportive of each other.
As an AVID demonstration school, our students are taught to take pride in their work and dream of opportunities after high school that otherwise may have seemed out of reach. These kids deserve everything we can give them.
My Project
COVID-19 has led to broader gaps in the academic levels of my students, as only a few students were successful at adapting to and keeping up with online learning. Currently, the headsets we have available to students are prone to break easily and many have gone missing. This makes it difficult when I try to scaffold instruction by recording video instructions for students to review if they fall behind or need extra direction. Students also often have tests that either have listening questions or require a mic (especially in the case of our SPED and ELL students). These headphones will allow me to use technology to accommodate more students and provide a wider array of learning resources to them.
