My kindergarten classroom is in need of some high-quality, educational puzzles. Puzzles are a basic teaching tool for young children. They "promote creative thinking and exercise problem solving skills. When you are playing a manipulative, hand-held puzzle, you're doing your solving using hand-mind coordination, which is about as good as it gets for exercising your gray matter." (from http://www.puzzles.com/PuzzlesInEducation/PuzzlesInEducation.htm) I am a kindergarten teacher at a school in an urban setting (Chicago). The neighborhood is in a transitional state. Urban redevelopment is occurring all around the children's homes, which is the Cabrini-Green high rise of Chicago Public Housing. My students come from homes with little to no stability. They need the stability of school. When school is fun and full of fun experiences they come and they learn. Puzzles are one of the most loved of all choice-time activities. My students enjoyed and benefited from the five my room had last year. This year I would love to have a set of puzzles that relates to more of the themes we will cover throughout the year. With the puzzles, my students will have engaging, hands-on, self-exploration in learning about things from basic concepts to scientific facts. What could be better for our futures?
