My students are special to me because they come to school not just to learn but for safety, nutrition, and to connect with teachers and peers to build positive relationships.
My Kindergarten friends are new to the country, speak a different language or have no prior school experience.
Most of my students come from low income, single parent families and do not get the family interaction a five/six year old should be receiving. My students also have family social-emotional concerns that roll over into the classroom.
My school provides free breakfast and lunch to 100% of students. Despite their not so safe home life, my students come to school ready to learn.
My Project
Nowadays, you're more likely to see kids playing video games than putting together traditional puzzles. Yet, fine motor skills are important in everyday development. Puzzles are very important to develop emotional skills, cognitive skills and physical skills.
Your donation will introduce my Kindergarten students to puzzles that many of us used to play at home when we were younger.
When my students go home they are put in front of the television or a video game. They do not get the opportunities to interact with family or friends in quality games that are educational and support their mental learning. When they come to class they will see a fun, puzzle table and not even realize that they are learning when they are playing.
When children complete puzzles with their friends they develop vocabulary, increase small muscle development, develop eye hand coordination, improve memory skill, increase problem solving skills, and build literacy skills.
