Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a low-income/high poverty school district which has been struggling for years. We have lost Pre-Kindergarten, art, music and sports over the last few years. These children come from many different backgrounds and cultures.
My special education kindergarteners are students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom.
They are autistic and have social communication and behavioral needs. They have difficulty learning and learn through trials. Most of the students have sensory issues and fine motor skill deficits. Many come from unstructured homes and don't know where there next meal is coming from. They need a lot of love and attention.
My Project
This is my first year teaching special needs children in kindergarten. I have recently had new students added to my class in December who are functioning extremely below level. They are not ready to learn letters or numbers yet. Even though they are 5 and 6 years old, they are functioning anywhere from 18-36 months.
These little hands need wooden peg puzzles to help them grow academically.
Puzzles develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. They build visual-perceptual skills, attention, concentration and thinking skills such as recognizing, remembering, matching, sorting and problem solving. Puzzles assists language skills as the child listens and follows instructions and talks about what they are doing.
These materials will make such a difference in my students' learning and will improve their school lives. These students are so limited and the school day is so long. They need easy, fun, hands-on puzzles to aide them in their education while making it enjoyable and achievable at the same time.
