Help me give my students the whiteboard and materials they need to become more actively involved and provide informal opportunities for them to discuss their thoughts.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I often work in a room having no whiteboard with small groups of struggling students who are hesitant to participate or ask questions. Also, my students have laptops but frequently express a desire to get away from their computers. By creating puzzles that encourage talking and participating rather than sitting and listening, my students will become more actively involved in their learning. The card stock will be used to create the puzzles and I will add magnets to the backs of the pieces so the puzzles can be worked on the whiteboard together. Sometimes the whiteboards will have categories written on them and students will have to determine which category the puzzle pieces go under. Other times the puzzles may be written on the board and students have to make connections between words/phrases/ideas simply by drawing lines to connect them.
Putting magnets on the back of the puzzle pieces allows students to easily work on puzzles together on the whiteboard.
I love watching students come out of their shells. They move around discussing their puzzle pieces and helping each other. This builds their confidence and communication skills and encourages them to be more vocal in their classrooms. In addition, while working together, they teach each other, which aids in the retention of what they learn.
Having a double-sided whiteboard gives them the opportunity to participate in good-natured contests to see which team can finish a puzzle the fastest. Each team works on a different side of the board. Doing this discourages laziness and makes the activity more fun. Finally, if they wish, students will be able to take puzzles home to study information and vocabulary.
