This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are curious and energetic boys and girls who need extra supports to achieve academic goals in both reading and math. They are students in grades Kindergarten through 1, on various levels of mastery so we work in small groups to meet individual needs.
Growing up in inner-city poses numerous challenges for them, but they are smart children!
Having the supplies to help them learn in a fun and interactive way helps to close the achievement gap that many of the students face.
My Project
Puzzles are the building blocks of learning in early childhood. What do I mean? Well, students learn about the part to whole relationship through completing puzzles. They learn that each part of the scene works together to display a complete picture. This is developed in math when students learn that one plus one is two.
This part to whole relationship is likewise important in reading, when we learn that C-A-T go together to make the word cat.....the building blocks for learning.
Then again when students learn that words go together to build sentences, and so on. Puzzles are also important for trial and error. When a student tries to put together a puzzle and the piece doesn't fit, they need to try the piece another way or try another piece altogether. This builds not only their skill, but also develops perseverance.
