This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are the first class in a new school with a manufacturing and engineering theme. In this Introduction to Engineering class, they constantly work on projects that help them relate to real-life design processes.

The 3,339 mostly (91%) Latino students in grades 9 through 12 attend our school at the southern tip of the city of Los Angeles.

Surrounded by several refineries and the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the school serves a blue-collar, working class community with a substantially (70%) economically-disadvantaged population. The majority of our parents work for these industries and others in the Los Angeles industrial harbor vicinity.

My Project

My students will first use these materials in a puzzle cube design project. Each student will design and build his or her own three-dimensional puzzle made of 27 individual wooden blocks, glued together into five pieces that, when assembled, form a 3x3x3 cube. They will design their puzzle pieces on paper and model them on the computer. As part of the design and manufacturing process, they will perform quality control on pre-cut blocks, ensuring that they fall within certain tolerances as measured with the calipers, and perform statistical analyses on the data they collect.

Students will learn about real-life manufacturing process, going beyond a simple craft project to go through a true-to-life design and manufacturing process.

They will not only gain knowledge about and interest in valuable career fields; they will also reinforce mathematical and problem-solving skills they learn in other classes.
