Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Think back to your middle school Spanish classes. Do you remember the textbook? I bet those classes would have been much livelier, much more motivating, if you'd used magazines especially created for teens, written in Spanish that was appropriate for the students.
Those are the kinds of magazines that I'd like to offer my students.
These are sixth, seventh and eighth graders at a school in South Florida. Over 80% of my students are classed as 'Hispanic', but the fact is that they speak Spanish with varying degrees of fluency. Some students speak little or no Spanish. Others speak Spanish well. The majority of my students fall somewhere in the middle: they 'get by' in 'Spanglish'. I teach several groups of children. Each group has typically 20-25 students and has all three levels - beginner, proficient and 'Spanglish' speakers. As you can imagine, these groups are tough to teach!
My Project
I think that these magazines will really help out. We're actually talking about subscriptions to three distinct magazines, at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The magazines have short articles designed to appeal to teenagers. I can use these magazines to teach the whole class, or for small group instruction.
These magazines are just what I need to liven up my Spanish class.
They are written to engage teenagers, and they come in beginner, intermediate and advanced editions. They are exactly what my students need!
