My students need a class set of 30, 2-sided (one side labeled and one side unlabeled ), laminated, desk-size world maps to continually improve their geography fluency and better understand geopolitics.

My Students

Ours is a large urban high school of nearly 2,000 students who come from a variety of backgrounds. We are a Title I school, and over 35% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. There is great ethnic diversity in our student pop ulation, with 20 or more countries represented, many of them in South and Central America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

In addition to the academic side, we have a technical education program with a variety of shops including carpentry, electrical, auto mechanics, CAD/CAM, health occupations, and culinary arts.

My Project

To understand history, one has only to look at a map, and the geopolitics of any one era or region comes into focus. This is what I want my students to be able to do on a daily basis as we delve into world literature from the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Central Asia this year.

With desk-top world maps, each stud ent will be able to reference at their own pace and curiosity level the political boundaries and geographic features of our world, honing their geography fluency at the same time they are making connections to what they are learning in history and reading in English.

The unlabeled side will also make it easy for them and me to test their growing mastery over time.
