Since I teach primarily Algebra 1, most of my students are freshmen, and all represent a diverse group of learners from across the community. As a school with a "Choice" program, we serve students within the district as well as students who apply from across the county to participate in our Scientific Research and Vet Science programs. As a result, the student body is a mixture of students who live in rural areas of the county, students who live in the inner city, and students who live in the suburbs.
I am inspired daily by the collaboration I see from students with different learning styles to include those that are gifted and those that have disabilities.
I have been taken aback by my students' eagerness to learn and desire to help one another. I am hopeful that I can continue to maximize their learning as I help develop the future - through them.
My Project
As my school pushes towards STEAM certification, it is critical that my students move away from the traditional paper and pencil of the math classroom and towards a math classroom defined by true technology integration. Although some students have their own devices, many cannot afford even a smart phone. The solution? Chromebooks!
Chromebooks will form the backbone of my part of the STEAM endeavor as students use them to facilitate daily learning experiences.
Students will use the Chromebooks to stay organized and complete assignments via platforms like Google Classroom, Khan Academy, and USA Test Prep.
The Chromebooks will enable my students to conduct research and make connections between mathematics and other subjects such as science and art. In addition, the students will be able to complete presentations, communicate with other classmates, and stay informed of current events as they develop an understanding of their place in the world.
