"Social Studies...Yuck!" is what I hear from my 5th grade students every time they lug their five pound Social Studies book out of their desks. I think I have found a way to put some of the spark back in this subject. I would like to purchase a weekly newspaper "USA Studies Weekly" for my class. Since I teach in a Title I school in a rural area, the cost is prohibitive to me unless I find alternative funding. These newspapers follow history from the explorers to the present time. The have cool illustrations the children would enjoy and the articles are short, which include historical passages, biographies, maps and other visual aids. The great thing about newspapers is that the students can highlight important passages and take notes right beside the text as needed. But most important of all is that they will be able to take them home to keep and in our small low income area that is really important to some children. Thanks in advance all you do and your caring for students.
