This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We really need your Help[.
Our school is located on the water's edge. It is a small Title I high school located in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn. We are sandwiched between two major urban bridges - The Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.
All of my students are English Language Learners (ELL's).
They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential.
Science is a discipline that can open doors for many of our students. As a discipline that is ever-changing, having access to biotechnology can offer a means to better understand the latest discoveries in this field of research.
My Project
Over the past few years, and with the generous financial aid of supporters of public education, I've been slowly piecing together all of the lab equipment required to create a state-of-the-art biotechnology lab. Thanks to you, I'm almost there. If we had a high capacity, 16 G-force microcentrifuge with refrigeration functions and adapters, my students will be better able to process DNA and protein samples for analysis. This is especially crucial for purification of DNA for barcoding, and DNA/RNA quantitation for reverse transcriptase PCR protocols.
Unfortunately, biotechnology is a very expensive discipline and this piece of equipment is beyond the means of our budget. Our school does not have the financial resources to purchase the type of equipment that is essential to develop a deeper understanding of the complex nature of DNA and protein analysis.
My job is to do everything in my power to help my students graduate high school and advance to college.
As a science teacher, my goal is to unleash my students' natural curiosity about the world around us and seek out further educational opportunities on their own. I cannot show my students the latest advances in the field of biotechnology without your help. Help me give my students access to knowledge, and a better understanding of our world of science.
