My students need school supplies and books for our school store. We need trade books, pens, pencils, and art supplies for the students to purchase with train dollars.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
So many times, much of a teacher's time and effort is spent with the few children who need the extra push behaviorally and the "good" kids are forgotten.
The students at our inner city school are hard workers who excel when they are presented with a challenge.
Daily, our students come to school, ready to learn and try their best, even though they face challenges many of us can only imagine when they are at home.
My Project
Our district, and more specifically, our school believes in Positive Behavioral Initiatives & Supports. That means we foster a sense of community and a warm school climate through the use of an RTI approach to teaching behavioral expectations. The students at our school are expected to follow 3 school-wide expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. Students who do the right thing at HRT are rewarded with "train dollars" that they can spend on items in the school store. Student learn the value of budgeting their money in order to purchase the items they really want or need. Students also learn the satisfaction of being able to earn money to purchase what they need with their own money. Unfortunately, we can only go so far in keeping the school store stocked without any resources to work with. Students at our school need school supplies and trade books to stock our school store so they will have items to purchase with the train dollars they have earned for their good behavior.
By providing school supplies to help keep the HRT store stocked, students will be able to continue to use this resource to obtain the supplies they need for learning.
Additionally, the incentive to follow the school rules and expectations are reinforced when students continue to see more items they need available for purchase. They really WANT to earn those train dollars!
