Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students with disabilities already have difficulty in acquiring new knowledge, but with only pencil and paper they will continue to struggle. They need concrete objects and examples to help them really internalize and conceptualize the alphabet and numbers so that it will "stick".
My students come from a high poverty level area, and we have well over 85% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
I service 10 students in two different kindergarten classrooms. They all have special needs. Their disabilities range from High Functioning Autism to Moderate Cognitive delays. They are mainstreamed in general education classrooms, but still receive lots of small group instruction.
My Project
We are into the fourth week of school and things have finally started to calm down. I have learned more about my students and what they need. I have a few students that need their materials presented in a different way than the rest of the classroom. They need the ability to get up and move around, as well as have time to do activities that are unstructured and self chosen.
The blocks and puzzles will give them the chance to do an activity of their choosing, but still will provide them with a learning opportunity. The peg number boards and letter activities were chosen for my students who are really struggling with pen and paper assignments that are given by the general education teachers. My students need the ability to conceptualize and internalize the material being presented.
As a third year teacher, second year in a classroom, I am still building up the materials I need to help my students succeed.
I have already received a few funded projects. If this project is funded it will be a few more items that can be used to really help my students pick up letter recognition, number concepts, and motor activities, which will then lead to the development of the educational background needed for them to go on to first grade.
