Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our music department is booming - we're at a point where all of our classes are literally overflowing with a diversity of students. Students range from complete beginners with no previous experience to students playing since a young age to those in top honors ensembles.
Regardless of experience, what makes our music students stand out is their hunger and thirst for new experiences.
Students can choose from a variety of classes including Keyboard, Guitar, Beginning Band, Beginning Strings, Advanced Band (Marching and Concert Band), Percussion Ensemble, Mariachi, Chorus, Chamber Choir, and AP Music Theory. Other extra-curricular groups include Pep Band and Jazz Ensemble.
My Project
Your funds go towards the first two types of mutes introduced to brass students: straight mutes and cup mutes, which are used in traditional and jazz repertoire. As mentioned in the title - this project is to support our TRUMPET students in particular.
While it may 'sound' counterintuitive, mutes can help both advanced and beginner students.
Cup mutes can be used as practice mutes within the classroom and at home - while it doesn't completely cut off the sound, it does drastically diminish the volume of the trumpets, especially helpful when rehearsing with other instruments that may not be as loud ( especially in Mariachi Class). Since the cup mutes also restrict the amount of air leaving the instrument, it provides beginning students resistance to help build endurance and muscle tone in supporting proper breathing technique.
We are also requesting two different types of straight mutes - one set that is much durable for everyday use, and another set that provide a much better tone for performances, perfect for the advanced students.
