My students need Magic Tree House books to foster a love of reading and build reading confidence, with books that are interesting and at an appropriate level.
We love our book studies! In our classroom we have 5 groups reading different books and having great literacy-based discussions. Reading lets us use our imaginations to discover new worlds, to analyze characters, and to learn how writers craft their books.
We are a class of 4th and 5th grade students, who attend a Title I school, in an impoverished neighborhood.
For most students, we learned English as our second language and we are still developing our language and literacy skills. We understand what it takes to succeed and the importance of our education.
We work hard every day to become better mathematicians, scientists, writers, engineers, explorers, inventors, and readers. Our school is filled with hopes, dreams, and ambitions, which are supported by teachers and staff who believe in and see our potential.
My Project
Being a multi-grade class, we have a shortage of great books to support our class members who are reading below a 4th grade level. We want to support our friends with book sets that they can read together during our book studies, which are interesting and books they will want to read.
The Magic Tree House series books we are asking for will allow these great kids to read books independently at home and to come prepared to have great discussions about the books. The books that were chosen also support science and social studies topics, and will surely generate a thirst for additional information, as we make those connections to the world around us. These books will allow struggling students to feel they fit in and they'll be eager to share their thoughts and insights about these books with the rest of the class.
It can be hard to be in a multi-grade classroom when you are a student that reads below grade level.
All of the materials we have for our newly adopted reading series are at a 5th grade level, so imagine the challenge for 4th graders who lack confidence in their reading abilities. With our book groups, we are finding limited choices in books these students are able to read with confidence, which at the same time do not seem remedial. Magic Tree House books are just what the doctor ordered.
