I teach the littlest of learners who come to school for the very first time. My students are three, four and five years olds who come from all areas of Chicago from diverse backgrounds. Many of my students come from high poverty neighborhoods. My school has self contained classrooms for students with special needs from kindergarten to third grade. It also has two self-contained pre-k classrooms, a blended preschool classroom and three preschool classrooms. I currently teach in one of the preschool classrooms which has an AM and a PM class. Some of my students have IEPs. They have developmental and speech delays. Most of my students are also learning English as a Second Language.
My students come to school with smiles on their faces in anticipation of the fun activities they are able to take part in while at school.
My Project
Reading to young children is one of the most important things that we can do with children to ensure future success in school and in their lives.
Providing my students with a listening library full of great books will ignite a love of reading at a young age.
My students will use the wireless headphones to listen to CD stories that will be placed on the iPods. They will learn to turn pages in their new books when they hear the page signals. I have other students who would find it easier or more enjoyable to watch/listen to a book on an iPad. We are currently using a CD player with wired headphones. The students need help to turn the CD player on and to put in the CDs. They also have to sit in one spot in the classroom which is next to the CD player. Having wireless headphones, iPods and an iPad in our listening library will allow my students to be independent in our listening library and allow them to sit anywhere they would like to listen to a story.
