Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm a 5th grade teacher with Teach for America in a low-income community at a Title I school in East San Jose, where 100% of students receive free lunch.
One of the subjects I'm most excited to be teaching this year is Social Studies. In fact, because of collaboration with teachers at my grade level, I teach Social Studies to all three classes in the grade level--almost 100 students this year alone.
However, due to high stakes testing, Social Studies is no longer considered an integral part of our curriculum, nor do we have adequate resources at our school site to teach the subject.
As a recent college graduate with a degree in Political Science from Cal Berkeley, I (not suprisingly) find this to be absolutely ahborrent. I've been putting in the extra time to plan out my own Social Studies lessons, but some additional resources would make the experience all the more meaningful for my students.
One of the best ways to make time for Social Studies learning is by integrating Social Studies content into the Language Arts curriculum that makes up 2/3 of our school day. However, in order to effectively make this happen, I need relevant, interesting, accessible literature--both historical fiction and non-fiction texts. I'd like a class set of the Newberry Award-winning novel, "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry," by Mildred Taylor, to teach post-Reconstruction era economics and race relations. I'd also like a set of biographies of famous Americans at a variety of reading levels. Finally, I'd like a class set of U.S. maps, so that we can put these readings into geographical context and use them to build awareness about our country.
Please help me to educate our future leaders, voters, and citizens!
