We provide a safe, nurturing place where students can learn and feel respected. Our school consists of a very diverse population culture-wise. Almost half of our students go home to speak a native language other than English. We have a 95% free and reduced lunch rate. Our school is a project based school in which we work hard to integrate subjects through meaningful long-term projects. This next year I am going to have a "literacy booster class" (first one ever attempted at our school) and will have the majority of students two years behind grade level. Statistics show that 80% of students leaving 3rd grade below grade level stay behind the rest of their academic career. I am trying to change that statistic by giving students intensive literacy instruction in fourth grade to catch up.
My Project
These writing materials will be used for when students complete their final copies of writing. Having a variety of resources for decorating final projects will be so exciting for students.
Being able to "pizzaz" up covers for books they write, as well as thank-you letters for guest speakers, family members and friends will have a huge impact on student motivation.
Students will be able to choose vibrant colors for handwriting, or printing for research projects as well as stories, persuasive essays, letters and cards, PLUS decorate final copies! This will make writing fun as well as motivate at risk students that find writing hard work.
