My Students

I work in the Student Support Center of my school. I focus on students with behavioral, as well as social and emotional needs. During a regular day, I see students that earn time for following behavior plans, need a calming space or an alternate recess for various reasons.

The best part of the job is watching how the students grow emotionally and learn to self regulate with the strategies they learn in the SSC.

Providing a quiet space is key for their continued growth.

My Project

So many children these days suffer from an inability to regulate their emotions. This deregulation causes disruption in the classroom and interruption to the teaching of the whole class. By being able to name what they are feeling and learning to self-regulate, students are able to prevent the explosive behaviors and meltdowns so many have experienced recently.

The Social and Emotional Foundations Kit offers children the tools they need to begin that journey to self-regulation.

They are offered a calming space in which to sit and sort through pictures of other children's facial expressions and then compare those to their own face, thus naming their feeling. If a child just needs a soothing moment, there are "huggers" for that as well. When a child can name their "worry", they can write it down and put it in the "Worry Eater" and have it go away.

Once the student has named their emotions, they are better able to problem solve, show empathy, use coping mechanisms and perform in the classroom.
