Putting Materials in Students' Hands and Extending Learning Through Literature!
My students need life cycle hands on models, books to extend content taught, models of planets, and organization materials to make materials easier to use independently.
My students are 1st and 2nd graders that are learning in a Montessori environment. They are self motivated learners who are eager to get their hands on good quality materials to learn concepts. The students use a work plan and progress in their education at their own pace. They learn by being introduced to concepts with concrete experiences and gradually move to more abstract work.
By learning in an environment that promotes practical life skills, incorporates materials that are aesthetically pleasing, and provides rich learning materials, these students are excited about learning and try hard to do their best so that they can move forward to the next lesson and material.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting for my students already have a place on our classroom shelves. I need your help to get them here! I'm requesting various life cycle models and books to compliment them for living things such as frogs, chickens, sea turtles, and insects. I am also requesting a series of language books to compliment our grammar works in which students will study types of words and parts of speech. This includes Parts of Speech Collection, Grammar Tales Collection, and Phonics Tales Collection. I am requesting a model of a solar system so that students can further research and understand planets beyond the cards that we already have. There are many books that I am requesting to add to our classroom library that students will have access to year round and will help students make connections to lesson content. All of the wonderful materials requested will need to be organized on the shelves which is why I am requesting organization materials such as folder holders, clear CD sleeves, and file sorters. I would love to give my students more literature to extend learning about rocks, oviparous creatures, insects, and habitats. Some of the books requested provide both information and a beautiful presentation of these topics. These books include: A Butterfly is Patient, A Nest Is Noisy, A Beetle Is Shy, and An Egg is Quiet.
Students will use these materials to build a firm understanding of concepts being taught about life cycles, the rock cycle, parts of speech, and mechanics of writing.
Part of the writing curriculum that we use involves cursive handwriting. The cursive moveable alphabet will present students with cursive lettering to create words as they practice spelling and reading new words.
