Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Early Childhood Special Education. Our classroom is filled with books, laughter, music, STEM activities, and the development of language! My elementary school is a Title I school with the majority low-income students in Austin. Our students are socially, racially, and economically diverse. Over 20% of our students are receiving Special Education services.
My students often need extra sensory input to help regulate their bodies.
When they are regulated they can then use their bodies and brains to learn STEM, literacy, and the arts!
They are eager to learn, eager to grow, and eager to be successful! We represent the diversity of our unique neighborhood and city.
My Project
This project includes a variety of STEM materials for my early childhood classroom. My students will use the simple machines to explore and experiment in the Block Center. They will practice building, problem solving, and creating with the treehouse and with the play dolls that reflect their ethnicity. They can build forts with the fort builder and use collaboration skills, new vocabulary, and social-emotional skills. The gingerbread STEM problem solving kit will be perfect for our thematic unit on Gingerbread Man. They can experiment with building and scientific exploration.
Developing a deeper vocabulary and higher level thinking skills is one of my main goals in my students' first year of school.
STEM activities are the perfect way to encourage them to try new things and to explore with friends.
