I am incredibly proud of my theatre students. Across all grade levels and amount of drama experience all my students share several qualities. First, my students ask questions. They want to understand material and make connections. Often we spend class time following a path I hadn't planned on because they have asked good questions.
My students can do a lot with a little: they are used to working with the minimum and accomplishing a great deal.
They find creative ways to use what we have and love to explore the topics we cover in a variety of ways. This is especially true on stage. We built Oz out of cardboard, tape, paint and string. Making something from nothing is something my students excel in
Finally, they are an incredibly welcoming group. Anyone who wants to join us is welcomed with open arms and given a home and family. We are strong as a group because we bring people in with us.
My Project
The ability to run theatre technology is a way into the industry for theatre students. Quality theatre technology also gives actors experience with equipment that will benefit them as they enter the performance side of the job. Having access to the types of sound equipment they will encounter in the world will give them much needed job skills.
On top of giving students job skills, sound technology will also improve the quality of our school productions.
Microphones will make it easier for my students to be heard on stage, especially during musicals. This year our musical is Fiddler on the Roof. A reverb unit improves the sound quality of speaking and singing and creates special effects. Our fall show is a Halloween piece that will benefit massively from sound special effects.
The MOTU Audio Express will let us use the technology we have already implemented to its fullest extent. We use QLab, the theatre industry standard sound program, to run sound effects and music. The MOTU unit lets us use QLab as it was meant to be used, sending sound to different speakers and managing the connection between QLab and the sound board.
