Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach inner city students, and for many English is a second language. The listening center will provide my students with the ability to hear high quality literature that is read fluently and with good expression.
Many of my students have not had adults read aloud to them.
They often crave this attention and modeling. The listening center will provide 20-30 minutes of listening throughout the day. This opportunity will enhance their ability to read fluently and comprehend many more texts than I could ever read throughout the school year.
My Project
I am excited for my class to listen to stories and poetry, everything from Harry Potter to Robert Frost. The listening center will allow them this opportunity and at the same time model for them appropriate, fluent reading. I have personally invested money into purchasing books on tape that are high interest and high quality; all we need is the listening center to complete this literacy dream!
Through your generous donations my students will hear fluent reading from actual authors in many cases.
They will be provided with modeling of appropriate language and expression. Their love of literature will be expanded as they listen to stories on a daily basis. They will be given an opportunity to listen to high quality literature. Most importantly, they will learn that people they have never even met care greatly about their education.
