Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As we move through the school year, my students learn about the world around them, from fundamental misconceptions to probing questions that send us looking to discover the answers together.
My students will virtually all be first-generation college students in a few years.
Our community of students, parents, teachers, staff members, and everyone in between work together to mold, chisel, and hammer the academic skills and work habits of our scholars over time. Even more than grit and rigor, what characterizes our small school community is also joy! While our students are learning, there is a palpable sense of warmth and laughter ringing through our classrooms.
My Project
Our modern world requires that we eschew a model of learning in which the teacher pours knowledge in waiting, empty receptacles (the students). With facts at the fingertips of touchscreens, molding students into joyful learners requires that students own their own classroom experience, forming their own passions and pioneering independent projects.
These materials are not textbooks or notebooks, but rather tools to enable student-centered learning: lab aprons for "making mistakes" and "getting messy,", creative tools like markers and colored pencils to create and share, and lab goggles to shield our eyes from formalin while we're peering into the dissected cavities of a fetal pig.
These materials are tools to catalyze student learning, and ultimately self-empowerment.
Our students deserve the best learning materials to support their education in general, and their science learning in particular.
