Help me give my students multiple copies of books for our small group activites so that we can increase both reading fluency and comprehension in our struggling readers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a public school on the side south of Chicago. My students are a mix of 3rd and 4th graders with moderate to severe intellectual and physical disabilities. My students were ALL born with challenges that most people will never have to understand. They are the few that have been diagnosed with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and other types of profound low occurance disabilities. Still, everyday, these bright and beautiful children with so much potential show up at the door to their classroom with smiles and sometimes fear but always with grit. Way more grit than I have, for certain, and way more than most people I know. They are just happy to be in a place where they all fit in.
My Project
As the year progresses I find that my struggling readers do their best when they are working together in a group. I am requesting books with multiple copies so no one has to share. Having multiple copies of high interest books will stop the arguments over favorite books and also allow my students to read together in a book club style. I dream of this strategy resulting in student led discussions about the book they are reading.
The new literacy skills kits and favorite books will enhance my non-readers ability to build their foundational skills and become emergent readers.
The kits have bold color and pictures of recognizable objects.
