Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My special education classroom is full of wonderful kindergarten and first grade students with a very diverse range of needs. Currently, I work with students diagnosed with a wide variety of disabilities including autism spectrum disorder, visual impairments, cerebral palsy, social-emotional disorders, and various developmental delays.
School can be very overstimulating, overwhelming, and challenging, especially for students who have sensory needs and motor impairments.
In my classroom, we try to find students' strengths and not blame anyone for weaknesses. While working both with intervention-level and grade-level materials, we are learning how to work together and growing in our understanding that the learning tools for each student may look different.
My Project
Picking up books for independent reading can be intimidating, especially when reading is difficult. I try to encourage students to look at books, but they frequently are disinterested. During our read aloud time, we recently read a lot of the Mo Willems books I had borrowed from our school library. During their free time, students were asking to look at these books! They shared these books with one another, laughed at each story, and constantly searched for guest appearances by the pigeon. It was fantastic to see students so engaged!
I would like a set of Mo Willems’s “Elephant & Piggie” books for the classroom so I can keep creating this magical joy and laughter, and to encourage my students to gather around books.
