Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our current society, it is not uncommon to find children surrounded by games, videos, and television. Especially when parents are working two and three jobs sometimes to provide for their children's basic needs. They don't always have the ability to go to the library to check out a book, let alone read it to them, and therefore, children are missing out on the exposure to a variety of literature and literacy skills.
As a teacher in a low socio-economic status area, I see a lot of students come to my first grade classroom with minimal literacy skills due to these challenges, and it breaks my heart to watch students struggle with something that has the potential to be so exciting for them.
For some of my students, First grade is the "First Grade" where they really learn to develop a love of reading, but a lot of them haven't had the privilege of growing up in a household where they had the opportunity to hear good reading and discover it for themselves.
My Project
My school is a STEM focused school, and seeks to integrate technology in as many areas of learning as possible. Being that my students are 6 and 7, technology can get a little complicated when trying to use QR codes and our school-purchased library software as 4-6 students are working together in a center during literacy time. We use online programs such as MyOn and iRead to develop literacy skills, however, we don't always have enough technology available between our classes for students to share on a consistent basis, and they often end up fighting over which book to read because of the time constraints in centers.
My goal is that through having the Kindle Fire technology, more students will be able to access quality literature, fall in love with characters and stories, and develop a passion for pursuing literacy more as they improve their skills through listening and playing with our school-purchased programs.
