Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach the honors seventh grade literature class in the poorest Congressional district in the country, in a school filled with some of the most heartbreakingly inspiring children in the world. Nearly 92% of my students qualify for free lunch and all of them are in need of as much extra support and help as they can get.
My students need 25 copies of Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird." Many of my students are just now recognizing their talents in English. For the majority, this is the first time that their intelligence has been acknowledged. To keep them on the correct path towards success, I would like to push my students to the limit by teaching them a text that is challenging both literally and emotionally. The themes in "To Kill a Mockingbird" will give my kids an understanding of the world before, as well as an understanding of the injustice that exists today that they must fight against. My school does not have a class set of the novel and my students desperately need the text. I want my students to be able to actively interact with their books-- to feel the slightly risen ink on the page, to scribble notes and text-to-text reflections on the sides, and most importantly, to have the gift of owning a really fabulous book that they can look back upon year after year.
My students are diverse in background and complex in mind and spirit. They believe deeply in friendship, brotherhood, fairness, and heart. They have personally experienced how difficult life can be. The themes in Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" will join together their world as children living in a dangerous urban community to a rich text that they will not only enjoy, but be able to relate to.
With your generous donations, you will be able to inflame my students into a love of reading and, most importantly, a love of books. Technology is on the verge of driving books into extinction and it has become even more essential for us to remind kids how wonderful it is to hold a book in your hands. My students are particularly remarkable little minds, spirits, and hearts and I have no doubt that they will change a simple class read to an individual life-changing experience.
