Do you remember your love of books as a child? Think of the anticipation and excitement you felt when choosing and opening a new book. My learners share that same excitement and joy of reading on a daily basis. My students are inquisitive, voracious readers who are craving to discover the newest adventures and information provided in their favorite books.
My students are book-loving, avid readers, and enthusiastic learners.
Students at my school are curious, compassionate, and creative. For English Language Learners, many of who are newcomers to our country, books are so important and are truly valued. This past year, nearly 3/4 of my class was considered an EL learner. Our classroom library is an essential resource for all of my students during Reading Workshop when students have the chance to "shop" for books that interest them. Some of my students do not have access to an abundance of books at home and rely on our library to find high-quality books. Each day, students dive into our classroom library with the hope of finding a "just right" book that will satisfy their curiosity in reading. In my classroom, there is a buzz about books and an excitement for reading.
My Project
In 1st grade, my students will "shop" for books they are interested in every single day. This means they are going through labeled book baskets to try to find a book they are interested in that is also a "just-right" book for their reading level. Students are flipping through the baskets and also taking baskets on and off the shelves in order to find the best book to read during our Reading Workshop. Currently, I have shelves that are not the most sturdy and do not offer the most space for students to maneuver through the books/baskets.
All children should have access to the best literacy experience, beginning with an organized, safe classroom library that brings them joy.
The shelves I am asking for would allow my learners this opportunity and make shopping for books the best experience possible.
