Most of my students are known as a geographical exception. Their parents opted to send their children to my school, instead of the school located where they live. They live in a rough part of our island and they can be a little rough themselves.
Despite it all they still have so much love to give and this is what continues to amaze me about them everyday.
These students have gone through so much in their young lives. I want to give the students at my school more resources and opportunities. They deserve an outlet and an opportunity to show the world just how amazing they truly are.
As a school we don't have many funds or opportunities for our students. We have no PE, art, music, or even a librarian. I want to provide some of the enrichment that my students deserve.
My Project
When I was growing up I was lucky enough to be a part of an organization called FIRST robotics. My experience with FIRST is something that continues to drive and inspire me to this day. FIRST means "for inspiration and recognition of science and technology". It is because of FIRST that I developed a love and passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It is because of my experience with FIRST that I long to give the students at my own school a similar experience. This is why I want to start a Lego League Jr. team at my elementary school.
Through this team my students will experience hands-on learning in STEM, but they will also experience lifelong lessons in teamwork, problem-solving, and graciousness.
This experience will not only be educational and enriching, but it will be something fun that my students can have to look forward to. I want my school to be a place where students can not only learn, but also have fun and create meaningful friendships.
In being a part of this team students will be presented with a problem that they need to use their legos to "solve". We will need this lego kit in order to participate in the FIRST program, but it is not included in our registration! This kit includes many necessary lego pieces as well as the programming components that students will need to use in the model that they build. Your donations will make it possible for us to purchase this lego kit!
