My Students

The 700+ students I teach in Drama represent seven grade levels, three special education classes, and 13 different languages. We are a Title I school, so many of our families are struggling financially. We provide breakfast and lunch during the school year and summer, and multiple opportunities for extended learning.

Unfortunately, many of my students do not have opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities such as theater, dance, and music.

My goal is to increase skills, boost confidence, and show appreciation in the area of fine arts.

My Project

The most obvious benefit of puppet-play is encouraging imagination and creativity. Other advantages include emotional development, improved motor skills, and learned etiquette. Students can also use puppets to retell information they've learned, or share new stories they've created.

Puppets will boost confidence in speaking and reading, and increase group participation.

The puppet theater will provide a stage for performing. This will encourage language development, singing, dancing, and exploring individual voices.

The masks and colored scarves are other tools I will use to inspire active participation in acting, singing, and dancing. Like puppets, masks allow students to more easily become different characters, and express themselves in ways they might not otherwise.
