I teach first grade in a one way dual language program, which means that the majority of the students come from homes where they have some exposure to Spanish (via parents, grandparents, etc). Unfortunately, unless students are taught in school to actually read, write, and speak in Spanish, the language is lost within two generations.
These kiddos, I call them "estrellas" (stars) love to learn through play.
They are to curious, cute, and energetic. They love puppets and crafts. 80% percent of my students receive free and reduced lunch, and most are 2nd generation immigrants from Latin America.
My project seeks to fill my classroom with creative puppets for my students to use throughout the day.
One of the most important things I can do for my students as a first grade teacher is to help them develop their oral language fluency.
A students ability to communicate effectively is highly correlated with her ability to comprehend the academic content she is presented in school.
Students will use these puppets throughout the day in a variety of scenarios. Some reluctant readers might use the puppets as "reading buddies" or comfort toys. Other times students will use the puppets for "dramatic play"-acting out scenes from a book or dramatizing their own written stories.
While I am particularly excited about the oral language development that these puppets will promote in my students , that is not the only reason I have created this project. Dramatic play is an essential part of early childhood education. It teaches self-regulation, gives children and emotional outlet, teaches conflict resolution, and promotes literacy. These puppets will help make our classroom a language-rich, fun-filled, safe, creative, and welcoming space for all to enjoy.
