Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am very blessed to be able to work with at risk children who are coming out of early intervention programs and into preschool to receive special education services. In addition I also work with their typically developing peers. I am a Speech Therapist who works between 8 preschool classrooms. I provide therapy to students in the classroom setting. I also provide language based instruction to typically developing peers. The children in my classes vary in their abilities, both academically and in their communication. Some children are not yet verbally speaking. Some have articulation errors. Some experience difficulties in communication because they are on the Autism spectrum. Some have difficulty with formulating language in both syntax and semantics. I especially do not have any materials to help my students that are experiencing auditory processing delays.
I embrace our school motto "Every Child, Every Day" in my classroom, I believe that every child should be given the best opportunity to learn and achieve every day.
I feel that a vital component in achieving is having the appropriate visuals to both reinforce and teach valuable skills.
My Project
In my class I am in constant need of items that can encourage sound production. Working with these puppets will help to better emphasize these letter sounds as well as other sounds associated with them. For example as we are working on vowel sounds, I can pull out the A (alligator puppet), the E (elephant puppet), the I (iguana puppet), the O (octopus puppet) and the U (umpire puppet). We can practice the sounds that each of the puppets names begin with and then we can act out scenes that will require the students to say the puppets name over and over again. Many of my students have goals that they are working on that have to do with articulating sounds clearly, this kind of play can create a fun learning atmosphere. Puppets will help to engage the students with the sounds we are doing. The alphabet learning locks will give students additional incentive to produce the letter sounds.
