My students are growing up in the same neighborhood and attending the same school that I did as a child. I feel such a strong connection to them and their successes because I know where they come from.
The community and parent involvement at my school is strong despite the socio-economic struggles that they face.
My students don't have many extra things at home so they are eager to come to school to have access to more. I believe that they deserve to have that access to the best learning environment and tools possible to help them be successful.
My Project
In my classroom this year, we are focusing on more play-centered learning. I am creating spaces in the room for more block building, art integration and math manipulatives. There is one area that I don't yet have materials for, and that is the puppet stage! I love the idea of my students telling their own stories through puppetry, as well as retelling stories that we have read together. I feel that it will boost their self-confidence, help them with their voice and agency, as well as working together with their classmates. Please help me to make this puppet area come alive!
