Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When my second grade students enter my classroom, they come to me with a broad spectrum of learning styles and abilities. As a teacher I want my students to see their full potential, regardless of what background the come from.
I teach in a high poverty school where all students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many students come from homes were resources are limited and where English is a second language. They are eager to learn and need a variety of ways to learn.
My Project
At our school, we implement a program called Reading Rangers. This program is designed to allow students to be successful at the level where they are independently reading and become better readers. Second grade students must graduate to Iron in the Reading Ranger Program. To foster a love of reading, students need to read both fiction and nonfiction books. My classroom library is filled with books that students can choose from.
However, I do not have very many books that prepare them for the Iron level.
In order to graduate their Reading Ranger level, students must read 20 chapter books at different point values. They must be successful with a passing rate of 90% on each quiz.
Since many of my students come to me speaking English as a second language, they need books that are high interest but easy enough for them to comprehend. The books that have been requested meet this requirement. They are high interest and engaging books that students all love to read.
Please help my students become Iron Level readers!
