Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in an ethnically diverse urban community. Nearly 90% of our population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. For the most part, my students live solely in their community, rarely thinking beyond their city. Because of that, I believe it is extremely important to introduce them to a world beyond Long Beach and Southern California.
My students are amazing individuals with tons of potential, but it is all too easy for them to get "stuck" in the limited world in which they have been raised.
I want to make my teaching as exciting as possible to get them interested and keep them engaged.
My Project
I truly believe that the most effective classes are those that utilize multimedia to fully engage students. I frequently use videos to enhance instruction as introductory pieces, enrichment, or even as student-generated end products. Unfortunately, the sound system I currently have in my classroom is inconsistent and often not loud enough to be useful. There have been times when we have resorted to closed captioning to watch videos. Official closed captioning is a great tool, but the automatic closed captioning can be ridiculously distracting.
My classroom needs an updated sound system designed for classroom use for multiple platforms.
A reliable system would save us time (I would not need to try multiple ways to get louder sound) and keep the lesson moving (successful teaching often relies on a good rhythm). It would also keep students interested in the videos we watch. At the same time, I could encourage students to include sound into their presentations. It would also make it more fun for students to create and present videos they make for the class as well.
