A typical day in my second grade classroom is all kinds of busy and fun! Children are actively engaged in learning through whole group lessons, small group discussions, hands-on activities, and independent or group work stations throughout all of the content areas.
I have the joy of teaching 24 spunky second graders in Cumming, Georgia.
Each of my students bring such a wonderful diversity to our classroom community through their cultural experiences, life experiences, and learning styles. I just love teaching this age group of kiddos! They are so eager to learn and really love being at school. Our school is located in a rapidly growing area, which means our student population is getting bigger and bigger each year. This makes it critically important to create a learning environment that is comforting, engaging and welcoming to all students.
My Project
These materials will be used to create STEM bins for a "Maker Space" in our classroom. I want to build this space in my room for my students to be able to explore, problem solve, and persevere through challenges. This Maker Space with STEM bins will provide an opportunity for students to build logic and creativity all while incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The bins will be filled with the products I have selected. These include different materials like wooden and magnetic blocks, pipe cleaners, dominoes, play-doh, Geostix, and much more!
This space will give students a place to collaborate and create together through hands-on STEM activities.
Students will be able to work in this space when they come in in the mornings, finish assignments early, at indoor recess, or as part of center rotations. These activities will allow my class to build social skills and classroom community by learning and listening from one another.
I have seen how opportunities for free play and exploration have positively impacted my students' learning experiences, and I hope that this additional space will help us to grow even more!
