My players come from challenging environments where aggression is often the answer to many problems. Many come from high crime and poverty-stricken areas. A lot of our students have issues related to anger and disrespect. Some of them have trouble interacting appropriately with one another, teachers, and administrators. These students have sometimes gone through some type of trauma, a divorce, or been the victims of abuse or neglect. Our district is 100% free lunch for all students. Basic necessities are not often a given. They often lack consistent parental support. Some are doing the best they can. Sports is where some of the kids get the chance to be successful. It teaches patience and determination. They get the support that they often are lacking. Participating in sports helps some students get into college and develop skills that will help them later in life. Some of my students often feel as if no one notices them or acknowledges their positive behavior.
My athletes at my school work hard to maintain good grades to be on our football team. Our district is fully free and reduced lunch. We don't have the right equipment to make us competitive against other teams and districts. It's so important for these boys to have better conditioning equipment to get better at their sport. They need weight benches and a barbel set to improve agility, strength, endurance and most of all stamina. These skills will allow them to improve their endurance, footwork and agility. Weights like this can be set up independently so the coaches can work on other skills with other players. It's important for them to have newer equipment because the equipment that we have is antiquated.
