My Students
The students I encounter on a day to day basis are one of a kind. They are hard-workers, motivated and want to succeed. They face many obstacles as students from an economically disadvantaged urban school district. To them, our school is a safe haven. The entire school community works hard to provide these young minds with an excellent education.
Many of our students face heavy financial difficulties.
Yet, they are determined. They have a genuine interest in learning and exploring beyond the classroom.
My Project
For the past three years, we have worked hard to bring our financially disadvantaged students on service-learning trips. We started out with a weekend trip to the Delaware shore to learn about how horseshoe crabs are used for medical benefits. Next, we took a small group to the Dominican Republic to volunteer alongside locals. This last school year we took a small group to Costa Rica for a life-changing service-learning trip.
Moving forward, we want to continue the tradition and this school year we are taking a group of 15 students on a service-learning trip to Puerto Rico.
Where they will volunteer, learn about the biodiversity and the culture.
