My students live in a rural setting about one hour from a major city center in Texas. This small school serves approximately 190 high school students and about 220 middle school students. My students live on farms, small neighborhoods, apartments, and other living arrangements.
We have thriving theatre, speech and debate programs with students attending more student events for acting competitions, speech and debate tournaments, and play festivals.
Students in my school are involved in multiple activities from Fine Arts, to sports, to agricultural classes. Many students have never left the state in which we live, and many students have never seen a live performance by a professional theater company.
My Project
My school has a Cafetorium and a nice Theatre classroom, but we don't have any dressing rooms, mirrors, or makeup lights!
We need clear storage totes with drawers and some traveling makeup/hair train cases so my beginning students and advanced actors and technicians can easily access their needed supplies during class and during shows.
(Currently all of our materials are stored in cardboard "copy paper" boxes, and it is time consuming trying to find everything we need.)
My students will benefit from this project because they will have organized products that they can find easily, they will utilize their time better by not wasting it looking for products and not being able to find them, they will learn supply-chain management and be able to inventory our products and reorder as needed; they will also learn how to requisition products from various theatrical makeup companies to find new and innovative products. By not wasting products because they were not stored properly and maintained properly, my students will begin to see that theatre in a rural school doesn't have to be "boondocks and duct tape with used boxes." Instead, theatre can be organized, just like the professionals do it whether traveling or performing in house.
