Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fifth grade teacher of all subjects in an elementary school in Brooklyn, New York. The school in which I teach is a Title I school in a low socio-economic neighborhood.
In our classroom community there are 28 bright and talented nine and ten year old students who will be graduating this year and going off to Middle School.
Throughout the year we study different genres of writing and literature which include poetry, non-fiction, fiction, essay writing, and mysteries to mention a few. The children not only study the craft and style of their favorite authors but they get to publish their own writing twelve times per year!
Upon the completion of the writing process - drafting, revising, editing and publishing - we end the unit with a "celebration". This celebration can include inviting parents to hear the students read aloud their final product or it could be simply meeting in the library with a second grade class and have the fifth graders read their poems or books to them aloud.
The conflict is we do not have ample supplies for the children. There are no art supplies available to teachers from the school and in September the children do not come in with the supplies that they are asked to bring on the first day. The teachers and administration do not push the issue due to the sensitivity and understanding that many parents simply cannot afford the expense of school supplies.
What we need are basic art supplies to make writing activities such as publishing an "All About" book in writer's workshop an authentic and enjoyable as well as an academic experience. These are materials that will enhance classroom activities and get children excited and motivated to put pride into their school work. Without the appropriate materials the children cannot publish significant products.
What we need are supplies such as paper edge scissors, butcher paper, colored tape for binding books as well as yarn to connect pages of books together and other art supplies. We would be grateful if you would take our proposal into consideration!!
