Our classroom is an inclusive one which means some of the students are high performing general education students while others are overcoming various challenges as special education students. Some of these challenges include autism, speech and language impairments and visual impairments.
It's wonderful to see the students in our class all accept each other and learn from one another despite their differences.
Besides their learning differences, our school's population is also very diverse. Located in the heart of Queens, NY we have many immigrant students who have recently moved to America. On the other hand, we also have many students whose parents and grandparents were raised right in Queens and even attended our school!
My Project
We have one iPad on the way to our classroom, but with 28 students in our class, another iPad would mean even more students could express themselves digitally in the classroom.
All of our students have improved their writing skills throughout the school year, but still many of them will avoid writing their best story, because writing with pencil and paper is a chore!
They just want to get the task over with.
However, publishing stories digitally is fun and enticing! The level of students' work tremendously increases when they are given the opportunity to be a digital storyteller. Thanks to our school's iPad cart, we have learned how to use many great applications to publish digitally and creatively. There is a long wait for this cart though, and we need these resources to be more readily available to our students to really make them true digital storytellers. Having two iPads in our classroom would double the amount of digital stories we could tell!
